The IRLZ44N is a popular N-Channel power MOSFET (Metal-Oxide-Semiconductor Field-Effect Transistor) manufactured by Infineon Technologies (formerly International Rectifier) . It is widely recognized for its excellent switching characteristics and is specifically designed as a logic-level gate drive MOSFET, making it ideal for direct interfacing with microcontrollers and low-voltage logic circuits.
A key distinguishing feature of the IRLZ44N is its very low gate threshold voltage (Vgs(th) typically 1V to 2V), which allows it to be fully turned on by logic-level signals from 3.3V or 5V microcontrollers such as Arduino, Raspberry Pi, ESP32, and STM32 . This eliminates the need for additional gate driver circuits in many applications, significantly simplifying designs.
The device features a planar cell structure optimized to provide a wide Safe Operating Area (SOA), ensuring reliability and robustness under varying operating conditions . The silicon is optimized for applications that switch at frequencies below 100 kHz, making it well-suited for low to moderate-frequency switching applications .
The IRLZ44N is available in multiple package variants:
-
IRLZ44N / IRLZ44NPBF: TO-220 through-hole package
-
IRLZ44NSTRLPBF: D2PAK (TO-263) surface-mount package
The “PbF” suffix indicates lead-free, RoHS-compliant versions of the device.
Note on Part Number: Do not confuse with IRFZ44N, which requires higher gate drive voltage (typically 10V) for full activation. The IRLZ44N (with an ‘L’ for Logic-level) is optimized for direct MCU control.
