The SN65HVD230DR from Texas Instruments is a 3.3V CAN (Controller Area Network) transceiver designed to interface a CAN protocol controller with the differential CAN bus. It complies with the ISO 11898-2 high-speed CAN physical layer standard and is optimized for operation in harsh environments.
This device features a single 3.3V supply, supports data rates up to 1 Mbps, and includes multiple protection features such as cross-wire protection, ground loss protection, overvoltage protection, and overtemperature protection.
The SN65HVD230DR offers three operating modes via the RS pin (pin 8):
-
High-speed mode: Connect RS pin to ground for maximum switching speed
-
Slope control mode: Connect a resistor between RS pin and ground to adjust slew rate (10 kΩ → ~15 V/µs, 100 kΩ → ~2 V/µs)
-
Standby mode: Apply high logic level to RS pin – driver off, receiver remains active with only 370 µA typical current consumption
The device also features a Vref pin (pin 5) providing a VCC/2 voltage reference.
